Carmelo De Marco un dei primi sammartinesi in America ai primi del ‘900

La nostra storia in America cominciò con Carmelo De Marco figlio di Francesco Antonio De Marco, da Sambatello, e Concetta Sofi da San Martino. Era il fratello di Martino, Salvatore e Nino. Carmelo Demarco era nato a San Martino di Taurianova nel 1888 e nel periodo delle grandi emigrazioni, Carmelo ancora giovanissimo, emigrò in America verso il 1910. Dopo qualche tempo anche suo fratello Martino lo raggiunse, ma dopo qualche anno, tornò in Italia dove presto fu chiamato alle armi e andò a combattere al fronte nella prima guerra mondiale, fu preso prigioniero dagli Austriaci a Caporetto e passò molto tempo nei campi di concentramento. Alla fine della Guerra fu liberato e a piedi percorse la lunga strada del ritorno per vedere la sua San Martino dove rimase per tutto il resto della sua lunga vita fino a spegnere le 100 candeline.

Carmelo De Marco sposò Caterina De Maria, la donna lo raggiunse in America qualche anno dopo la morte del giovane marito e qui, gli diede sette figli: Katherine, Frank, Samuel, Theresa, Carmela, Joseph e Angela che vive ancora oggi e che il 29 giugno 2010 compirà 80 anni. Carmelo appena arrivò in America si stabilì a North Bergen nel New Jersey e qui lavorò per molti anni in una fabbrica di sapone mentre Caterina accudiva la giovane e numerosa famiglia.

Katherine non si sposò e non ebbe figli. Frank si sposò ed ebbe tre figli: Frank, Michael, e LoriAnn. Samuel si sposò con Annie ed ebbero un figlio di nome Jeff. Theresa si sposò ed ebbe tre figli: Frank, Anthony (Butchie) e Theresa. Carmela si sposò ed ebbe due figli Kathleen e Joann. Joseph (Joe) si sposò due volte dal primo matrimonio ebbe una figlia della quale si son perse le tracce, dal secondo matrimonio nel 1959 con una bellissima donna Cecoslocca chiamata Regina ebbero due figli Carmine e Regina, la donna aveva già un figlio di nome Gerard. Angela (Angie) si sposò con Nick Verducci ed ebbero quattro figli: Joe, Nicholas (Nick), Donna e Angela.

Questa bella storia comincia nel 2010 grazie a Facebook.

Un giorno Vincenzo (Cecè) Gallo da San Martino e sua moglia Linda, mi trovano su Facebook e mi chiedono se sono Martino DeMarco figlio del cugino Pietro. Rispondo di si, e ricordo di quando Cecè e il fratello Piero partirono per l’America nei primi anni 60. Allora mi vengono in mente i cugini De Marco che non abbiamo mai visto e gli chiedo se li hanno mai incontrati. rispondono negativamente ma Linda, che è un appassionata di genealogia, fa delle ricerche e trova una figlia dello zio Carmelo, Angela De Marco in Verducci e il figlio Nick. Ci mettiamo in contatto e poco dopo saltano fuori anche Carmine De Marco e la moglie Karen Benevento De Marco e la di lui sorella Regina De Marco Gaffney. Grande entusiasmo da ambo le parti e dopo qualche telefonata e tantissime email e scambio di foto storiche mi invitano ad andarli a trovare. Io non sono mai stato negli Stati Uniti ma nella mente mi frullava da tempo l’invito del mio vecchio amico Rocco Ferraro (Cartolina) di andarlo a trovare a New York. Ora avrò due motivi per fare finalmente questo viaggio a distanza di 100 anni sulle orme dei miei antenati. Carmine e Karen stanno preparando una festa per il mio arrivo e hanno invitato tutti i discendenti americani dei De Marco di San Martino (RC).

Carmelo tornò a San Martino solo una volta nel 1971 dopo ben 61 anni dalla sua partenza. Si rivide dopo tanti anni con i suoi fratelli Martino, Nino e Salvatore e le sorelle Giuseppina e Angelina. Aveva ormai più di 80 anni e quando ripartì verso il New Jersey portò con se alcune foto che rimasero alla figlia Angelina e che oggi grazie a Facebook e al cugino Nick Verducci abbiamo rivisto e distribuito a tutti i parenti ed amici e che per tutti si trovano in questo sito internet.

This story had begun in 1910 when Carmelo DeMarco migrated to the United States. He was born in San Martino – Reggio Calabria in 1888, third son of Francesco Antonio DeMarco and Concetta Sofi. He was a tall and lanky young man. Carmelo settled in North Bergen – New Jersey and found a job in a soap factory. His brother Martino went to America as well but stayed a few years and then returned to Italy. Soon after his arrival he was drafted in the army and went to serve his country in WWI. He was captured at Caporetto and spent several year years in a POW camp. He used to tell us kids that when he was freed he walked for thousands of kilometers home to Calabria, where he married and remained for the rest of his very long life.

When he was a bit tipsy at times he used to sing us “It’s a long way to Tipperary” a song that I think he learned during his American stint or during his POW days.

Meanwhile in America, Carmelo was joined by Caterina De Maria a fellow villager, the two married and had seven children: Katherine, Frank, Samuel, Theresa, Carmela, Joseph and Angela.

Frank married and had three children: Katherine, Michael and LoriAnn.

Katherine (Katie) never married and had no children.

Samuel married Annie and had a son called Jeff

Theresa (Tessie) married and had three children: Frank, Anthony (Butchie) and Theresa.

Carmela (Millie) married and had two children: Kathleen e Joann.

Joseph (Joe) married twice he had a daughter from the first marriage but nobody knows where she is.

He remarried in 1959 with a very beautiful Czech woman called Regina who had a child (Gerard) from a previous relationship and had two children Carmine e Regina.

Angela (Angie) who soon will be celebrating her 80^th birthday married Nick Verducci and had four children: Joseph (Joe), Nicholas (Nick), Donna e Angela.

In 1971 amazingly Carmelo returned to Italy after 61 years in the US. He said “I came back to see everyone before I die”. Not that he was about to die, he was still tall and straight postured like a young man. I was 16 at the time and remember him well. Only his brothers and sisters recognized him, all the other two generations of the Italian DeMarco weren’t even born when he had left. Carmelo stayed in Italy about 45 days, spent the whole time with his siblings and other members of the family, he took some pictures with his camera and some old photos and returned to his family in North Bergen.

This beautiful story recommenced in 2010 when Vincenzo and Linda Gallo from Rochester NY contacted me asking if I was the son of their cousin Pietro DeMarco. I replied that I was and remembered of when he and his brother Piero migrated to US in the early 60’s. I soon jumped on the chance to ask if they had ever seen my American relatives the DeMarcos. They hadn’t and knew nothing about them. That wasn’t the end of it as Linda Gallo who is very passionate about genealogy made some searches and found Angie Verducci and her son Nick in Bergen County. My father had some old address given to him by Uncle Carmelo during his visit and although they were not current anymore still helped to define the search area. We have now reciprocated some phone calls and countless emails and exchanged lots of pictures old and new. Cousin Angie DeMarco Verducci is the only survivor of Carmelo and Caterina’s children and seems to be an outspoken and strong principled person and as such I see her as an iconic family figure. During our second phone conversation Angie said to me that now that we have reconnected I had to go and visit them. I have bought a ticket to the US and cousins Carmine DeMarco and Karen Benevento DeMarco are hosting a family reunion for all the relatives. Even my old friend Rocco Ferraro who in the past had invited me to visit him in New York is excited at the news. I have never been to the States but now I got two good reasons for making this historic trip 100 years later on the trails of my ancestors.
